Total Hip
Replacement -
Anterior
Approach
The anterior
approach total
hip replacement
is a truly
minimally
invasive total
hip replacement.
The technique is
a major advance
in joint
replacement. It
reduces the
morbidity and
pain of standard
or mini-incision
total hip
replacement
because it does
not cut away or
cut through any
muscles. This
also improves
the safety of
the procedure by
making the hip
more stable.
Consequently,
patients may
return to a more
functional
lifestyle as
early as
possible.
Through an
inter-muscular
and
inter-nervous
surgical
interval, the
surgeon reaches
the hip without
the need to cut
through muscle
or to detach
tendon
insertions.
Additionally, it
is proven that a
hip done this
way is
inherently more
stable against
dislocation. One
major advantage
has been our
ability to
eliminate
postoperative
precautions. In
contrast to
other
operations, our
patients
undergoing the
anterior
approach no
longer require
elevated toilet
seats or other
specialized
instrumentations
to put on their
shoes and socks.
They may drive
as soon as they
are comfortable,
and can sleep in
any position
they prefer.
Recent major
technological
advances have
now made all
parts of the
procedure
extremely
reproducible and
predictable. Not
only has the
instrumentation
been modified,
but also a
special table is
now used that
allows the
surgery to be
done on nearly
any patient of
any size or any
age.
The technique
also
incorporates the
most accurate
form of
continuous image
navigation. All
steps of the
procedure are
done under clear
direct
visualization
augmented with
the safety of
image
navigation. This
way the surgeon
can determine
exact sizing and
placement of the
components at
all times.
Postoperative
complications
related to
implant
malpositioning
and leg length
inequality can
be minimized
significantly.
